The
Ontario Cheerleading Federation commenced operations in 1987 with the conscientious effort of a
group of teachers and coaches who
volunteered their time to
pioneer an organization that would develop guidelines and promote
a growing activity in the province.
The grass
roots traditions of cheerleading
in Ontario had its start with school based teams, where the activity
grew from being a support activity
for other teams in the schools,
to a feature event of its own.
Competitive cheerleading
in the province of Ontario has seen a rapid increase in participants
of all ages,
and the once smaller overcrowded
events hosted at school gyms, have now moved to more spacious but
still crowded arenas and convention
halls.
The
Ontario Cheerleading Federation provides training and certification courses for coaches across the province and encourages
all coaches to act responsibly and
improve their knowledge and skills to ensure skill progression and
safety in their programs. Improved coaches
training and safety awareness
is designed to minimize and optimally eliminate risk which is essential
for the growth of cheerleading
in Canada.
Thanks to the support of
our membership, the
Ontario
Cheerleading Federation has been able
to provide mats
and spring floors as well
as larger facilities for all of our events. Continued support from
families, participating cheerleaders
and all of our sponsors
has provided opportunities such as scholarships for exceptional
and dedicated young people. The organization has
also recently taken a prudent
and responsible step to provide and offer comprehensive insurance
to its membership.
The
Ontario Cheerleading
Federation looks forward to continued
success and growth in the
future.
